Canada Scores Big in Portugal

Ottawa, Ontario – Canada’s Women’s World Cup Team finished first-round play at the 9th Algarve Cup today in Silves, Portugal, with an impressive 7-1 win over Portugal. Canada won all three games, earning themselves nine points, putting them in first place in Group C. Canada will now play the fourth place team of Group 1, Finland, on March 7 in Lagoa, Portugal at 10.00h (local time).

Canada won all three games, earning themselves nine points, putting them in first place in Group C. Canada will now play the fourth place team of Group 1, Finland, on March 7 in Lagoa, Portugal at 10.00h (local time).



Vancouver native, Amber Allen earned her first goal with the World Cup Team only two minutes into the game, giving Canada a quick 1-0 lead. Randee Hermus, also of British Columbia, added to the score in the 15th minute to double Canada’s lead. At half time, the score was 3-0 as result of a goal from Christine Sinclair in the 29th minute.



Even Pellerud made three substitutions at half calling in Noel Trepanier, Kara Lang and Heather Smith. This marks Smith’s first international appearance with the senior side.



Lang quickly added to Canada’s 3-0 lead in the 48th minute and added another in the 81st minute. Lang now has four goals in three games. In between Lang’s goals, Smith scored with a strong drive from 18-yards out in the 70th minute. This marks Smith’s first international goal with the senior team. Sinclair added another goal, the final of the game, in the 85th minute. Sinclair has tallied four goals for the tournament, bringing her career total to 25.



A miss-mark by the Canadian defence enabled Portugal, the host country, to score a goal in the 73rd minute.
