While making its appearance, the Canadian team will get to check out the new soccer campaign launched by Winners. Posters featuring some of the star players are proudly displayed in stores across Canada, each of which promotes an online contest at winners.ca by which fans can win a Canadian cross-country trip. The winners.ca website also encourages fans to send the Canadian team their best wishes.
Soccer fans visiting the downtown Winners store will get to meet some of the best players in the world, including FIFA World Player of the Year finalist Christine Sinclair and recent CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualification scoring champion Melissa Tancredi. The 19-player lineup features many of the stars that helped Canada qualify for its first-ever Women’s Olympic Football Tournament berth, not to mention a few that helped the Canadian U-20 team win the recent CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship in Mexico.
For those young fans showing up early, Winners will be giving away 50 soccer balls. Kids can then get their soccer ball signed by their favourite players.
The Winners store event is all part of the build up to the Thursday 10 July match at BMO Field. The women’s team is making its debut at the Toronto stadium. It is also Canada’s last full international friendly before the team departs for Asia and the 2008 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament.
Canada’s women’s national team, whose title sponsor is Winners and whose presenting sponsor is Teck Cominco, was most recently ranked 9th in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings. The team has competed in each of the last four FIFA Women’s World Cups.
