Canada announces women’s camp in California

With the hiring of new head coach Carolina Morace, the Canadian Soccer Association has announced details for the national women’s team’s activities this February. The team will group this month for a two-week camp in Los Angeles, CA under the new head coach.



Along with Ms. Morace’s appointment, the Association has also announced it has named Elisabetta Bavagnoli as an assistant coach to the women’s program. Ms. Bavagnoli is a long-time assistant to Ms. Morace.



The February camp will be Canada’s first under new head coach Morace. The camp will run this 8 – 18 February in Los Angeles, California. The camp will feature 26 players, most notably captain Christine Sinclair and CONCACAF scoring hero Melissa Tancredi.



Canadian U-20 Player of the Year Jonelle Filigno is the youngest player in camp while Chelsea Stewart, Erin McNulty and Allysha Chapman are all up from the youth team. Martina Franko is the elder statesman in camp while Karina LeBlanc and Amy Walsh are the two last players who made their debuts in the 1990s under coach Neil Turnbull.



Canada, whose title sponsor is Winners and presenting sponsor is Teck, has finished amongst the top-nine teams at each of the last three FIFA senior women’s competitions. In August, it reached the quarter-final of the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament before losing to number-one ranked USA in extra time. Also in 2008, Canada’s women’s U-20 team won its second CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship and participated in its fourth FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
