The Canadian performance was markedly improved over the last Canada-USA match on 25 May in Toronto. In Rochester, Canada gave an excellent defensive effort led by goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc. Wambach’s goal in the 78th minute came after she was sent in behind the Canadian defense where she clinically buried the chance off the far post.
We played well, we lost but that is normal because we have to improve, said Canadian coach Carolina Morace. Tactically we played well. We can always improve some situations.
Christine Sinclair narrowly missed reaching the 100 goal plateau herself as her flicked header near the end of the first half flew high and wide of the American goal.
Canada, whose title sponsor is Winners and whose presenting sponsor is Teck, will face USA on Wednesday 22 July at Blackbaud Stadium. The 22 July match kicks off at 20.00 ET / 17.00 PT and will be broadcast in Canada on Rogers Sportsnet (all four channels).
