Canada concludes friendly series with USA

Canada’s women’s national team saved its best for last, but was unable to overcome long-time rival USA in the third and final friendly between the two sides in 2009. Canada suffered its third loss to the world’s number-one ranked country, this time falling 0:1 on a last-minute goal to USA youngster Christine Nairn.



“I am happy because I see the team improving game after game,” said coach Carolina Morace. “This is the most important thing. We need to continue to have regular camps. It is also important to play against teams that are weaker than us as we need to build confidence and winning is very important to this.”

 

The Canadian squad played its best match under Morace thus far as they continue to familiarize themselves with the new playing system.   

 

“Carolina is trying to make progressive changes, focusing on possession and trying to build attacks from the back,” said Canadian captain Christine Sinclair. “She has brought a new dimension to the program, her intensity is great.”

 

USA won the two previous matches in the series, winning 4:0 on 25 May in Toronto and 1:0 in Rochester, NY on 19 July.
