Diana Matheson makes 100th appearance

Canada’s Diana Matheson has become the sixth Canadian player to make 100 appearances for the national team. The Canadian midfielder reached the century mark this evening in a Women’s International Friendly match against two-time FIFA Women’s World Cup champion Germany.



Matheson was 18 years old when she made her debut with Canada’s national team on 18 March 2003 at the Algarve Cup (an 0:1 loss to Norway). She scored her first of six goals with the national team on 15 June 2003 in a 2:1 win over Mexico. Her most recent goal was the winning goal at the 2010 Cyprus Women’s Cup in February (a 1:0 victory over New Zealand in the final).



Matheson has represented Canada at two FIFA Women’s World Cups (2003 and 2007), one Women’s Olympic Football Tournament (2008), one Pan American Games (2007), and three CONCACAF women’s championships (2004, 2006 and 2008).



Before her 100th appearance, coach Carolina Morace said to the team that she was proud to coach such a great athlete and representative of Canada. For the milestone match, Matheson wore the captain’s armband.



Matheson follows in the footsteps of Charmaine Hooper, Andrea Neil, Christine Sinclair, Randee Hermus and Amy Walsh. Oddly enough, Matheson was replaced by substitute Walsh when she made her 100th appearance in 2009.
