Canada WNT opens in first place at Guadalajara 2011

Canada picked up three points on the opening day of the XVI Pan American Games Guadalajara 2011. Canada won its opening morning match 3:1 over CONCACAF rival Costa Rica, with goals scored by forwards Christina Julien, Christine Sinclair and substitute Amélia Pietrangelo.

Canada picked up three points on the opening day of the XVI Pan American Games Guadalajara 2011. Canada won its opening morning match 3:1 over CONCACAF rival Costa Rica, with goals scored by forwards Christina Julien, Christine Sinclair and substitute Amélia Pietrangelo.



All eight teams are in action this 18 October on the opening day of the Pan American Games Women’s Football Tournament. All matches are played at the Estadio Omnilife in Guadalajara, Mexico.



Also on Tuesday, Brazil won 2:0 over Argentina, Colombia won 1:0 over Trinidad and Tobago, and host Mexico drew 0:0 with Chile.



Canada’s next match is Thursday 20 October against group opponent Argentina (11.00 ET / 10.00 local / 08.00 PT). Canada then faces Brazil on 22 October at (21.00 ET / 20.00 local / 18.00 PT).



Canada’s overall record this 2011 season is 11 wins, two draws and six losses. Sinclair, who scored her 118th career goal, picked up Player of the Match honours. Coach John Herdman, meanwhile, earned his first win for Canada.



Canada is the defending bronze medal winner from the last Pan American Games Women’s Football Tournament in 2007. Canada is currently preparing for January’s 2012 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying tournament in Vancouver, BC.



2012 CONCACAF WOMEN’S OLYMPIC QUALIFYING

This coming year’s 2012 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying tournament will take place in Vancouver, BC from 19-29 January at BC Place Stadium. Canada and seven other CONCACAF nations will fight for two available tickets to the London 2012 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament.
