Canada qualifies for the FIFA Women’s World Cup USA 1999 with a 2:0 victory over Costa Rica in the 1998 CONCACAF Women’s World Cup Qualifier semi-final stage. In front of a home crowd at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke, ON, Charmaine Hooper scores two goals in the first half while Nicole Wright posts her fourth-consecutive clean sheet in the competition.

Canada wins 6:0 over Mexico in a Women’s International Friendly match at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, BC. Kara Lang scores a hat trick while Sasha Andrews, Rhian Wilkinson and Clare Rustad also score for Canada. Hometown striker Christine Sinclair, 20, becomes the seventh player (and by four years the youngest) to make her 50th appearance for Canada.

Canada posts a 1:1 draw with Honduras in a FIFA World Cup Qualifiers match at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton. Both goals are scored in the final 10 minutes, with Jason de Vos scoring in the 82nd minute and Amado Guevara scoring on a penalty awarded by referee Benito Archundia in the 88th minute. Paul Peschisolido makes his 53rd (and final) appearance for Canada. Mark Watson becomes the second player to make his 75th appearance for Canada.

Canada wins 1:0 over Jamaica in a Men’s International Friendly match at the Complexe sportif Claude-Robillard in Montréal, QC. Rob Friend scores the lone goal of the match. Coach Stephen Hart gets his first win in his first international “A” match on the Canadian bench.

Brian Robinson scores Canada’s first FIFA World Cup Qualifiers goal in Mexico, albeit in a 1:2 loss at Estadio Azteca.

THIS DAY IN FOOTBALL: 5 September 1984
Canada qualifies for the FIFA U-20 World Cup USSR 1985 with a 1:0 a.e.t. victory in the CONCACAF Men’s Under-20 Championship semi-final. It marks the second time Canada has qualified for the FIFA U-20 World Cup. David Phillips scores the winning goal in the 109th minute. Paul Dolan posts his fifth clean sheet of the tournament.

Canada wins 3-2 on kicks from the penalty mark to capture gold at the IIIèmes Jeux de la Francophonie in Antananarivo. The Canada-Congo final ends in a 0:0 draw before kicks determine a champion.

Canada wins the 1998 CONCACAF Women’s World Cup Qualifier with a 1:0 win over Mexico. Liz Smith scores the lone goal of the match. The match is played in front of a sold-out crowd of 4,971 fans at Centennial Stadium.

THIS DAY IN FOOTBALL: 6 September 2008
Canada falls 1:2 to Honduras in a FIFA World Cup Qualifiers match at Stade Saputo in Montréal. Off to a quick start and already up 1-0, Canada loses Tomasz Radzinski to an injury after he is pushed to the ground and, after sliding on the wet grass, has his finger cut on the underside of the end boards. Ali Gerba almost makes it 2-0 but hits the post in the 45th minute, then Ramon Nuñez scores two goals in the second half. Canada hopes to mount a comeback, but is reduced to 10 men after Patrice Bernier is cautioned twice inside three minutes (71st and 73rd minutes). On a side note from the same match, Richard Hastings becomes the 19th player to make his 50th appearance for Canada.

Canada wins 3:0 over Puerto Rico in an away FIFA World Cup Qualifiers match at Estadio Juán Rámon Loubriel in Bayamón. Iain Hume scores late in the first half before substitutes Simeon Jackson and Tosaint Ricketts score late in the second half.

THIS DAY IN FOOTBALL: 7 September 1984
In the pouring rain at the 1984 CONCACAF Men’s Under-20 Championship, Canada falls 1:2 after extra time in the championship final against Mexico. The final is played at the National Stadium in Port of Spain. Mexico scores first and David Phillips equalises in the second half. Mexico’s Mario Galvez scores the winner in extra time.

THIS DAY IN FOOTBALL: 7 September 2010
Canada wins 2:1 over Honduras in a Men’s International Friendly match at Stade Saputo in Montréal. Paul Stalteri sets the national record by making his 83rd appearance for Canada. Josh Simpson and Kevin McKenna score for Canada, with the winner headed home in the 42nd minute. The match is briefly halted late in the second half because of lightning, but the match is completed for a Canadian victory.
