Toronto, Ontario – The Canadian Soccer Association announced today that though it has yet to receive official word from CONMEBOL of the postponement of the Copa America tournament until 2002, it acknowledges the media reports quoting CONMEBOL President Nicholas Leoz.
The CSA respects the decision, which was made by CONMEBOL today in an emergency meeting in Buenos Aires as a result of security issues, and supports the need to maintain a safe environment for fans, players and officials.
As a result of the postponement, the Canadian team will not hold a pre-tournament camp and will not play an international friendly against Panama on July 8. The Canadian Soccer Association hopes to arrange a game with the Panamanian Federation at a future date and thanks them for their understanding given the present circumstances.
