Ottawa Fury co-wins Ottawa’s Amateur Team of the Year award
International footballer Christina Julien has been named Ottawa’s footballer of the year as part of the 2011 Ottawa Sport Awards. Julien was named top player from the region for her sport in advance of the Ottawa Sport Awards dinner on 19 January 2012. Her club Ottawa Fury, meanwhile, was named co-winner of the Amateur Team of the Year award.
In 2011, Julien helped Canada set a national record with 14 wins in 24 matches, with Julien appearing in 20 of those international matches. She scored four goals (second most on the team) and made her debut at a FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany. She also helped Canada win a gold medal at the Pan American Games Guadalajara 2011.
As part of her club season, Julien played for the Ottawa Fury of the W-League, helping the team reach the championship final.
As for the Fury, the club was named co-winner of the Ottawa Amateur Team of the Year award (along with the Ottawa Lions track-and-field club). This past year, notable Fury teams included the U-13 Boys team (USL New England Division champions after an undefeated season), U-15 Boys (USL New England Division champions), U-16 Boys (USL New England Division champions), and the women’s team (USL W-League Great Lakes Division champions).
