Toronto FC has announced its annual award winners at its year-end “90th Minute” party in Toronto, ON. The Major League Soccer franchise celebrated its third season at Alice Fazooli’s in downtown Toronto on Wednesday night.
Midfielder Dwayne De Rosario won both the Most Valuable Player and Golden Boot awards, goalkeeper Stefan Frei won the Defender of the Year award, and defender/captain Jim Brennan won the Humanitarian of the Year award.
De Rosario set a club record with 11 goals in 28 games during the 2009 MLS regular season. He also scored three goals during the 2009 Nutrilite Canadian Championship and won the George Gross Memorial Trophy as most valuable player. His three goals in the last match of the tournament helped Toronto FC capture the 2009 Voyageurs Cup.
Rookie goalkeeper Frei, meanwhile, won Defender of the Year honours. Frei won back-to-back Toronto FC Player of the Month honours in March and April. Captain Brennan, at last, won Humanitarian of the Year honours. This past year, he was an ambassador for both KidSport Ontario and the “Spread the Net” organization (bed nets for Liberia and Rwanda).
