Colin Jose Earns Media Award

The National Soccer Hall of Fame is proud to announce the establishment of the Colin Jose Media Award to recognize members of the media who have made significant contributions to the game throughout their writing and/or broadcasting careers. “The media in all its forms play a significant role in the growth of the game,” Hall of Fame President/CEO Will Lunn stated. “The Hall of Fame is determined to recognize the best of these men and women. It is also with great pride that the Hall of Fame names this award for noted journalist and historian Colin Jose, who has done so much to report and record the history of soccer in North America!” “ This award is something I believe is an important step for soccer,” Colin Jose said. “However, the idea that the Board of Directors would chose to name it for me never crossed my mind. Writing about the game has always been close to my heart, not my career, and it was it’s own reward for me. There are many others for whom this Award could have been named – What an honor!”

“The Colin Jose Media Award will be considered annually, though not necessarily awarded annually,” George Brown, Chair of the Eligibility and Awards Committee of the Board of Directors, reported. “It is designed to reward outstanding career contributions, not simply excellence in a single year. The Award is open to nominations primarily from newspaper and magazine editors, television and radio producers to honor those who actually do the writing or the broadcasting.”

Nominees may be submitted via email to the Hall of Fame Director of Communications. Nominations will be accepted for the initial award will be accepted until September 1.

A select committee has been organized to review the nominations and to choose the very first winner of the Award. Members of the committee are Colin Jose, Jim Moorhouse, Director of Communications, U.S. Soccer, Trey Fitz-Gerald, Senior Director of Communications, Major League Soccer, and Jim Trecker, noted media consultant to the North American Soccer League, U.S. Soccer, the U.S. Soccer Foundation, CONCACAF and FIFA. Jack Huckel, Hall of Fame Director of Communications, will serve as Secretary of the Committee in an ex officio role. In following years, Award recipients will join the Selection Committee and play a significant role in the selection of future winners.

Soccer in America entered a new era with the announcement of 2004 Inductees FIFA Women’s Player of the Century Michelle Akers, U.S. and LA Galaxy Star Paul Caligiuri and All Time U.S. Goal Scorer and MLS Star Eric Wynalda. “2004 opens the Hall of Fame door to the stars of MLS and to a new generation of players whose playing careers soccer fans have been able to follow on national television,” Will Lunn, President/CEO of the National Soccer Hall of Fame, stated. The three will be inducted at the Hall of Fame on October 11, 2004. Induction 2004 is open to the public and free of charge.

Located in Oneonta, NY, the National Soccer Hall of Fame opened a 30,000 sq.ft. state-of-the-art museum in 1999.
The Hall of Fame tells the story of soccer in America through artifacts, photographs, and video clips. The Hall features an extensive interactive, youth oriented Kicks Zone where visitors have fun kicking, heading and playing computer trivia stations and video soccer games. The VideoWall portrays some of the greatest moments and the greatest goals in history as well as live soccer action with World Cup, MLS, US Soccer and WUSA matches. Unique and rare artifacts on exhibit range from the world’s oldest soccer ball to the Women’s World Cup won by the USA in 1999, Pele’s and Mia Hamm’s uniforms, Kristine Lilly’s golden shoes, NASL championship rings, the original MLS championship trophy, WUSA gallery – it’s all at the National Soccer Hall of Fame. In addition to the interactive Museum, the National Soccer Hall of Fame complex boasts the Kicks Hall of Fame Museum Store, a research library, four world-class soccer fields and office/meeting facilities. The Hall plans to add a stadium, additional fields, and housing facilities in the future.
