Canada Soccer President Peter Augruso marked the 40th anniversary of Canada’s first FIFA World Cup qualification with a visit to historic King George V Park. Augruso made the visit as part of a recent tour to meet Canada Soccer’s provincial and territorial presidents from across the country.
Canada won the 1985 Concacaf Championship and qualified for the 1986 FIFA World Cup at King George V Park on 14 September 1985. Canada won the memorable match 2:1 over Honduras and captain Bruce Wilson lifted Concacaf’s Gabriel Kafaty Trophy in front of a packed Canadian crowd.
Canada went undefeated in 1985 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers en route to winning the Concacaf Championship. Across eight matches, they won three home matches (two in Victoria, one in St. John’s) and two away matches (Port-au-Prince and Tegucigalpa) plus drew once at home (Toronto) and twice on the road (Guatemala and San José).
This summer, King George V Park celebrated its 100th anniversary, making it one of the oldest football stadiums in the country. The venue will host the upcoming 2025 National Championships and was recently the host to the St. John’s 2025 Canada Games in August.
Augruso’s visit to St. John’s is part of a cross-country tour to engage with PTSO Presidents and Board Members who govern soccer at the local level.
