Edmonton Scottish SC wins 14th Alberta provincial title

Edmonton Scottish SC won their 14th Alberta Soccer men’s provincial title on Sunday as the former Canadian champions qualified for the 2024 Toyota National Championships. Sebastian Cabrera and Noah Lechelt were the goalscorers as Edmonton Scottish SC ran out 2:0 winners over challengers Edmonton Green & Gold at the Riel Recreational Park in St. Albert. Goalkeeper Jay Vetsch and his backline posted the clean sheet.

Edmonton Scottish SC won the Challenge Trophy as men’s national amateur champions in 2016 after finishing as national runners up in 1992, 2012 and 2015. They finished in third place in 1987. They have won eight of the past 11 men’s provincial titles since 2012 and they finished sixth overall at the Toyota National Championships in 2023.

In the 2024 Alberta Cup Final, the Edmonton Scottish SC starting lineup featured Jay Vetsch (goal), Cameron Borrett, Samuel Lam, Noah Lechelt, Sebastian Cabrera, Eric Gehlert, Conor MacDonald, Anoop Sahota, Paul Hamilton, Matthew Lam and Nicholas Lechelt. Coach John Pegg featured Stefan Gajic, Almir Gajic, Andrew Gibbs, Dexter MacLachlan, Mike McCormick, Massimo Mirabelli and Janko Vong as substitutes while Scott Hornbeck and Josh Samuel dressed but did not feature.

In the past three Alberta Cup Finals, Edmonton Scottish SC have beaten Edmonton Green & Gold twice (2023, 2024) and lost to the Green & Gold once (2022). Scottish SC previously beat the Green & Gold in 2016.

This year, Canada Soccer will welcome a record 105 qualified teams to its national amateur competitions across the Futsal Canadian Championship (April), Player-Development Program Championship (August) and Toyota National Championships (October). The 105 qualified teams will come from a group of more than 800 amateur teams competing in men’s and women’s divisions in the adult, U-17 and U-15 categories from September 2023 through October 2024.
