Canada Soccer’s Para Soccer National Team finished in sixth place at the Parapanamerican Games after losing a heartbreaker in extra time to the hosts Chile on the final day of the Santiago 2023 competition. It was a difficult week for the Canadians who finished last overall after playing much of the week without their star captain and an experienced centre back for much of the group phase.

Canada lost group matches to Venezuela, Brazil, Chile, Argentina and USA, but they also lost both captain Samuel Charron and centre back Silviu Butnaru midway through the loss to Chile. As a result of their injuries, they were both available for less than half the available minutes in the group phase.

Charron scored three of Canada’s four goals in the tournament while Butnaru scored the other goal with an assist from Charron. Charron, a two-time World Cup Player of the Tournament, scored his milestone 50th international goal for Canada on the second day of the Parapanamerican Games against the eventual champions Brazil.

Both Charron and Butnaru were back for Canada’s last match and Charron even scored the equaliser that sent the Match for 5th Place into extra time (before Chile scored the winner).
