Canadian soccer heroes celebrated as part of WE CAN Hometown Billboard Campaign

23 Players named to #CANWNT roster along with five match officials celebrated across the nation

Canada Soccer’s FIFA Women’s World Cup heroes will be featured on outdoor digital billboards across the nation as part of the WE CAN promotional campaign which aims to help inspire Canadians from coast to coast. The outdoor billboards will celebrate the 23 Women’s National Team players and five Canadian match officials who will participate in this summer’s competition, in their home communities during the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023™.

The Canada Soccer billboards recognise and celebrate the incredible support each community has provided in developing Canada’s heroes into the athletes and referees they are today.

Built around Canada Soccer’s unifying message of WeCAN, the outdoor billboards launched on Monday 10 July following the announcement of Canada’s official squad for the FIFA Women’s World Cup. This year’s billboards were placed in communities in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Québec, and Nova Scotia and are expected to generate more millions of impressions nationally.

This summer’s campaign follows a similar program that was developed in the home communities of the players selected to Canada’s official squad for the FIFA Men’s World Cup Qatar last November.

To support and inspire Canada Soccer’s Women’s National Team, the #WeCAN campaign encourages Canadians to post a video featuring the words ‘We Can’ along with at least one reason why they believe in Canada’s quest in Australia. At the same time, fans are encouraged to follow Canada Soccer’s digital channels on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, Threads, and YouTube to find extended coverage featuring the hashtag #CANWNT.

CANADA SOCCER’S WOMEN’S NATIONAL TEAM
Canada are Olympic champions (Tokyo 2020), two-time bronze medal winners (2012 and 2016), and two-time Concacaf champions (1998 and 2010). In all, Canada have participated in eight consecutive editions of the FIFA Women’s World Cup™ (1995 to 2023) and four consecutive editions of the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament (2008 to 2021). At Tokyo 2020, Canada Soccer’s Women’s National Team became the first Canadian team to win three consecutive medals at the Summer Olympic Games and just the third nation in the world to win three medals in women’s soccer.

Canada Soccer’s Women’s National Youth Teams, meanwhile, have won four Concacaf youth titles: the 2004 and 2008 Concacaf Women’s Under-20 Championship, the 2010 Concacaf Women’s Under-17 Championship, and the 2014 Concacaf Girls’ Under-15 Championship. Canada have qualified for nine editions of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup (including a silver medal at Canada 2002) and all seven editions of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup (including a fourth-place finish at Uruguay 2018).

Canada Soccer Referees have represented Canada on the world stage, with Canadian match officials appointed to the recent FIFA Men’s World Cup in Qatar, Tokyo Olympics, and Concacaf Gold Cup. The group selected for the FIFA Women’s World Cup are highly decorated and collectively have officiated at numerous FIFA World Cups and other important international tournaments.
