Alistair Johnston wins Scottish League Cup

Alistair Johnston won his first club title with his new team Celtic FC in Glasgow, Scotland. The Canadian fullback won the 2023 Scottish League Cup at historic Hampden Park after a 2:1 win over their oldest rivals Rangers FC. With nearly 50,000 fans in attendance, Celtic FC won the League Cup Final on Sunday 26 February.

This marks the 21st title for Celtic FC in the 76-year history of the competition. Founded in 1887, Celtic FC has accumulated 52 league titles, 40 Scottish Cups, 21 League Cups, and one European Cup.

Johnston joined Celtic FC following the men’s FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and has since played 10 matches in all competitions. He again played the full 90 minutes for Sunday’s League Cup Final as they went up two goals on goals by Kyogo Furuhashi. Johnston becomes the third Canadian to win the Scottish League Cup alongside Jack Cowan (1951, 1952) and David Wotherspoon (2021).

Johnston from Aurora, Ontario has made 33 international “A” appearances for Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team since 2021. He was 16 years old when he made his debut in the Canadian youth program and 22 years old when he played his first international “A” match on  25 March 2021. He set the Men’s National Team record for most consecutive international matches.
