CF Montréal
CF Montréal have set a new franchise record for Major League Soccer wins and points this 2022 season with still five fixtures remaining on the calendar. CF Montréal reached the milestone with a 4:3 away win over rivals Toronto FC on Sunday 4 September, giving the Montréal side 16 wins and 52 points just on the edge of securing a playoff spot. Through 29 league matches, CF Montréal are second in the MLS Eastern Conference standings and third overall across the 28-team league.
The squad is coached by Wilfried Nancy and has featured Canadians Zorhan Bassong, Zachary Brault-Guillard, Sebastian Breza, Mathieu Choinière, Alistair Johnston, Ismaël Koné, Kamal Miller, James Pantemis, Samuel Piette, Joel Waterman and Rida Zouhir.
Montréal’s previous best was 15 wins and 51 points during the 2015 MLS season, the same year they reached the Grand Final of 2014-15 Concacaf Champions League. In the MLS playoffs, CF Montréal reached the Quarter-Finals in 2015 and the Semi-Finals in 2016.
With the Sunday win in Toronto, CF Montréal also established new club records for goals in an MLS season (53), goals by Canadians in an MLS season (14), and consecutive MLS away wins (five). This is also the first time that six different Canadians have scored for CF Montréal in an MLS season (Brault-Guillard, Choinière, Johnston, Koné, Miller and Waterman).
CF Montréal joined Major League Soccer in 2012 as the third Canadian team after Vancouver Whitecaps FC (2011) and Toronto FC (2007). Alongside their MLS record, they won the Canadian Championship in 2013, 2014, 2019 and 2022. Before MLS, they won: the Commissioner’s Cup as USL A-League or USL First Division regular season title in 1995, 1996, 1997, 2005 and 2006; the APSL / USL A-League / USL First Division playoff championship in 1994, 2004 and 2009; and the first edition of the Canadian Championship in 2008.
