Toronto FC reach Quarterfinals in 2021 Concacaf Champions League

Toronto FC have eliminated Mexican side Club León to reach the Quarterfinals of 2021 Concacaf Champions League. Toronto FC won the two-leg series 3-2 on aggregate, featuring both an away 1:1 draw on 7 April and a 2:1 win on 14 April.

Toronto FC will face Cruz Azul FC of Mexico in the Quarterfinals, with the first and second legs to be scheduled for late April and early May. This marks the third time that Toronto FC have reached the last eight in Concacaf, having previously reached the Semifinals in 2012 and the Grand Final in 2018. Toronto FC and Cruz Azul FC last faced each other in Concacaf Champions League in the 2010-11 group stage (Toronto FC won at home and drew away in Mexico). Since 2010, Toronto FC’s all-time record against Mexican teams in Concacaf Champions League is five wins, five draws and six losses.

In the Round of 16, Club León’s Fernando Navarro scored first in the opening leg, but Toronto FC equalized when they forced an own goal in the 50th minute. In the return leg, Patrick Mullins (on a cross from Jacob Shaffelburg) and Justin Morrow (after a pass from Ralph Priso) gave Toronto FC a 3-1 series lead before Navarro scored the last goal of the series.

Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League is the Confederation’s flagship club competition. Since 2008, Vancouver Whitecaps FC, Toronto FC and CF Montréal have all reached the Semifinals or later. Montréal were runners up in 2015 while Toronto FC were runners up in 2018.
