Jonathan David ? Alphonso Davies
Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team players Jonathan David and Alphonso Davies have been shortlisted amongst the Golden Boy 2020 Last 20 finalists. The 2020 award winner, recognising the best young player in Europe aged 21 or younger, will be announced on 14 December.
Forty journalists from news outlets across Europe will vote on the Golden Boy 2020 award. As noted by Tuttosport, the list of newspapers includes L’Équipe, Marca, Times, Bild, France Football, Sport-Express, A Bola, De Telegraaf, Aftonbladet, and Blick. The list of voters also includes representatives from three Italian sports newspapers (Tuttosport, Corriere dello Sport-Stadio, La Gazzetta dello Sport) and five Italian television channels (Rai, Mediaset, SKY, LA7 and Dazn).
While journalists will select the Golden Boy 2020 award winner from the list of Last 20 finalists, fans online will vote for the Golden Boy Web award winner, also to be named on 14 December.
The long list of 100 finalists for the 2020 Golden Boy award was unveiled on 15 June, after which the list was cut to 80 names on 15 July, further cut to 60 names on 15 August, cut again to 40 names on 15 September, and finally cut to 20 names on 15 October.
David spent the 2019-20 season with KAA Gent in Belgium before transferring to Lille OSC in France for the 2020-21 season. Davies, meanwhile, was a multi-trophy winner with FC Bayern in Germany, notably becoming the first Canadian player to win the men’s UEFA Champions League title.
