Ottawa, Ontario – Canadian Men’s World Cup Team head coach Holger Osieck today announced the 18-man roster which will defend the Gold Cup title at the 2002 Gold Cup in Miami and Pasadena from January 18-February 2.
The squad will assemble in Ft. Lauderdale on January 13 to begin preparations for Canada’s opening game against Haiti at the Orange Bowl in Miami on January 18 (sportsnet at 9:00 p.m. EST in most regions). Canada’s second and final game of the opening round is against Ecuador (sportsnet at 9:00 p.m. EST in most regions). The quarter-finals will be played in Miami on January 26 with the semi-finals in Pasadena on January 30. The Final will be played at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on February 2.
The roster features two players making their World Cup team debuts in Julian de Guzman and Chris Pozniak. Both competed for Canada at the 2001 FIFA World Youth Championship in Argentina. Defender Mark Rogers returns to the squad for the first time since November, 2000. Rogers has become a regular fixture for the Wycombe Wanderers and will join the team following Wycombe’s FA Cup Third Round replay against Fulham at Craven Cottage on January 15.
