Brazil wins FIFA Confederations Cup

Brazil won the FIFA Confederations Cup South Africa 2009 after a 3:2 victory over USA in the final. Brazil overcame a 2-0 deficit at the half by scoring three times in the final 45 minutes for the title. It marked Brazil’s third FIFA Confederations Cup title.



USA won silver after upsetting Spain in the Wednesday semi-final with a 2-0 victory. Brazil, meanwhile, reached the final after a 1:0 win over host South Africa in the Thursday semi-final. In the bronze-medal match on Sunday, Spain won 3:2 after extra time over South Africa.



The FIFA Confederations Cup features six confederation champions, the reigning World Cup champion, and the host nation. The competition is held every four years. Along with Brazil, USA, Spain and South Africa, the 2009 competition featured Egypt, Iraq, New Zealand and 2006 World Cup champion Italy.



CONCACAF champion USA returns to North America and will take part in the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup from 3-26 July. Canada, who won the biennial championship in 2000 and took part in the 2001 FIFA Confederations Cup, officially opens the 2009 tournament in the 3 July match against Jamaica. Canada also plays El Salvador (7 July) and Costa Rica (10 July) in the opening phase.
