January: Canada ranked eighth in CONCACAF

Canada’s points and ranking on the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking remained unchanged on the first chart of the 2011 season. Canada remains eighth in CONCACAF with 411 points, this after not playing in the month of December or early January. There was very little movement on the overall ranking during this period.



The FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings looks at each country’s international results from the last four years. The ranking takes into account the result, the importance of the match, the strength of the opponent, the regional strength, the time period, and the number of matches per year. Matches played more than a year ago are valued 50% of matches played in the last year (matches played more than two years ago are valued at 30% while matches played more than three years ago are valued at 20%).



Within CONCACAF, the big change was the return of Honduras to the top-three. One month after Jamaica and Cuba made big climbs thanks to their official CONCACAF competitions in the Caribbean, Jamaica slipped to fourth while Cuba remained in fifth. Honduras (climb of 15 points) made the biggest jump amongst CONCACAF nations.



On the overall FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, there was no change to the top eight spots. The top-five nations remain Spain, Netherlands, Germany, Brazil and Argentina.
