Vergara Appointed To 2002 FIFA World Cup

Ottawa, Ontario – The Canadian Soccer Association today announced the appointment of FIFA assistant referee Hector Vergara to the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan/Korea. Vergara, along with 35 other FIFA assistant referees and 36 FIFA referees, received news of his appointment today from the FIFA Referees’ Committee.

Vergara, along with 35 other FIFA assistant referees and 36 FIFA referees, received news of his appointment today from the FIFA Referees’ Committee.



“I am ecstatic, actually speechless,” said Vergara from his home in Winnipeg. “This appointment is a combination of years of dedication and hard work with sacrifices from myself and my family. It is like an Olympic dream come true. I plan to represent Canada with utmost professionalism.”



Vergara, a native of Winnipeg, is one of Canada’s nine assistant referees and recently worked at a World Cup Qualifying Game involving Mexico and Trinidad and Tobago on September 5, 2001. Other accomplishments include the 2001 FIFA Under-20 World Championship in Argentina and 2000 Olympic Games Qualifying matches. Vergara has been a FIFA assistant referee since 1993.
