Canada MNT confirms match in Korea Republic

Canada v Korea Republic

Canada Soccer has announced that the Men’s National Team will play Korea Republic during the November window on the FIFA international calendar. The away match will be played Friday 11 November 2016.

“They are a nation that are in the group stage of their FIFA World Cup qualifying as well as preparing to host the FIFA U-20 World Cup Korea Republic 2017, so there will be a great atmosphere and buzz across the country,” said Michael Findlay, Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team Interim Head Coach. “We look forward to gaining valuable experience playing in front of their crowd and that atmosphere.”

Canada Soccer continues to commit to play on as many international windows as possible, with this the fourth consecutive year that the Men’s National Team have taken advantage of the November window. The Canada squad for this camp will be announced in early November, but it is expected to feature primarily players that have wrapped up their 2016 calendar season.

On Thursday 6 October, Canada won 4:0 over Mauritania in a Men’s International Friendly in Marrakech. Canada will face hosts Morocco on Tuesday 11 October in the second match of the October international window.

Korea Republic are in the six-nation Group A of Asia’s 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia Qualifiers. The 11 November match against Canada will help Korea Republic prepare for their Tuesday 15 November qualifying match against Uzbekistan.

“Korea Republic provide us with a quality opponent who are in the midst of qualifying and we look forward to playing in front of their crowd,” said Findlay. “The travel and logistics of this camp and match also provides us with an opportunity to assess the players’ ability to adapt both on and off the field.”

In 2016, Korea Republic have posted a record of six wins, one draw, and one loss in eight matches, including a 3:2 win over Qatar on 6 October. Korea Republic will face Iran on 11 October and then Canada on 11 November in the upcoming FIFA international window.

Canada and Korea Republic have faced each other five times between 1985 and 2002. The matchup is even between the two nations, with two wins each and a draw.

Canada have an all-time record of 13 wins, three draws, and 14 losses in 27 international matches against Asian opponents, including the recent 2:1 win over Uzbekistan on 7 June 2016. Over the last two years, Canada have posted a record of nine wins, seven draws, and six losses in 22 international matches against all opponents.
