as noted in 1924 in the Calgary Albertan, he was “one of the most popular players in the city”... said club president Bob Stark in 1924, McLean “is the greatest left back in Canada”... as noted in 1924 in the Vancouver Sun, he is “the steadiest back in the province, no mistake about that... he has a trusty boot and when it comes to tackling a man has few superiors in the game; he is well set up and has a lot of speed, making him an ideal performer for defence, for whenever Mitch blocks them, he has a knack of getting by and clearing”... as noted in 1924 in The Globe, “his experience is expected to be a great asset to the (Canadian) team” on their tour of Australia... as noted in a 1924 Brisbane program, McLean “specialises in a solid tackle and he puts plenty of weight behind his kicks; left back is his regular position, but he appears to be just as much at home when moved to centre half or the forwards”...
