James Fleming... soccer family (son Sean)... married to wife Kathleen and they moved to Canada in 1968 (they had children Sean, Anne, Paul and Angela); his wife passed away in 2016... he was 87 years old when he passed away on 17 November 2022... worked for the Government of Alberta (1968 to 2000)....
served as the 27th President of the Canadian Soccer Association (from 1982-86 and then again from 1998 to 2002)... honoured as a Canada Soccer Life Member... honoured by the Canada Soccer Hall of Fame and the Concacaf Hall of Fame... recipient of the FIFA Order of Merit in 2002... honoured as an Alberta Soccer Life Member... recipient of Canada Soccer’s Aubrey Sanford Meritorious Service Award in 1997...
attended the Final Match at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015 in Vancouver...
said Fleming in 1985, “I am very happy for the players and coach Tony Waiters in reaching (the FIFA World Cup) Mexico. All of them overcame trials and tribulations in magnificent fashion in the qualifying rounds. In short, I am a very proud Canadian”... said Fleming in 1985 of his first term as Canada Soccer President, “we opted to emphasize the elite athlete element or dimension to enrich the overall program and receive recognition from the government and other funding agencies. Either your vision of soccer is (the) recreational pursuit or it encompasses the whole range of competition, including recreation. I see it as the latter”...
said Terry Quinn in 1997, “under (Fleming’s) leadership and particularly during the final two years of his (first) Presidency, Canada Soccer experienced its greatest change and the very best results achieved on the international field of play” (at the 1984 Olympic Games and 1985 CONCACAF Championship qualifying for the 1986 FIFA World Cup)...
