Sonia Denoncourt

Sonia Denoncourt... she was 13 years old when she started refereeing in 1978... earned a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and Sport at Université Sherbrooke... earned Masters degree in Sport Administration at the University of Ottawa... in 1994, became of the first three Canadian women on the FIFA List of Referees... in 2005, she became the first women’s referee inducted into the Canada Soccer Hall of Fame (she was the first female non athlete inducted as an honoured member)...

said Denoncourt in 1995, “as a referee, one must have a knowledge of the laws of the game, be physically and mentally prepared, and have the talent necessary to apply those laws. The secret is the ability to focus and the decisions one makes on the field”... said Denoncourt in 2004, “FIFA has given me the chance again to give back to the game and help referees reach their potential. it is quite an honour as this is the first time FIFA has appointed women instructors”... wrote Kevan Pipe in 2004, “her dedication and passion for the game is remarkable. The soccer world will certainly miss her on the field, but she will continue to have a great impact on the game with her professional work off the field and behind the scenes”...
