Doug McMahon

Douglas Alexander McMahon... soccer family (father Sandy, brother Bill)... he was married to Elizabeth Bruce (their children Judith, Doug Jr)... he was the best man at teammate Donnie McLean's wedding on 22 May 1948... he was 79 years old when he passed away in Montréal on 16 April 1997... served in World War II for the Royal Canadian Navy (19 June 1941 to 31 August 1945)...

in 1950, he was one of 16 footballers shortlisted in a Best in 50 Years poll by The Canadian Press... in 2000, one of 17 alternates shortlisted by The Soccer Hall of Fame (he became an honoured member as part of the Class of 2002)... in 2012, he was honoured by The Soccer Hall of Fame as one of “Canada Soccer’s Best XI in 50 Years: 1912-1962”...

wrote Scotty Harper in 1938, “he’s a terror to opposing boys who guard that precious area 24 feet wide and 8 feet high”... as noted in 1946 by the Montréal Gazette, he was a “fleet footed” forward... as noted in the 1948 Gazette, “probably the most polished player in the city”... as noted in a 1956 program, “his body swerve was something beautiful to behold”...
