Edward MacLaine... joined the King’s Own Scottish Borderers in 1917... transferred to the Scots Guard... was discharged from the army in 1921... moved to Canada in 1924... he was married to wife Hannah Hamilton in 1926 (their children were Ian, Edward, and Kenneth)... he was 73 years old when he passed away on in Lachine, QC on 14 June 1972 (he was buried at Mount Royal Cemetery)... worked as a general accountant at Canadian Vickers in Montréal...
posthumously honoured by the Canada Soccer Hall of Fame as a player...
said MacLaine in 1961 of scoring a Québec league record 60 goals, “I’m sure a great deal of the credit for that should go to my playmakers Johnny Brown and Dave McKenzie”... as noted in 1925, he was a “lanky forward”... said Peter Miller, “Dave McKenzie and Johnny Brown would perform all sorts of fandangles, then feed the ball to Eddie MacLaine who would drive it at the goal with tremendous power”... as noted in 1931 in the Toronto Star, he had “a habit of scoring unexpected goals”... as noted in 1932 in the Toronto Star, Eddie “needs no introduction to Toronto fans, having made many appearances during the last few years; slowing down but still gets enough goals to warrant inclusion in Montréal’s best team”...
