USA drew first blood with a goal from Mallory Swanson in the seventh minute. Swanson added her second of the night in the 32nd minute when she intercepted a pass from Vanessa Gilles to goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan and finished from close range.

Canada pushed to respond to the USA’s two-goal lead, controlling possession in their opposition's half and searching for ways to break down America’s deep backline. They mustered up a few chances throughout the first half, most notably a Jessie Fleming inswinging-freekick that found Christine Sinclair, whose header flew over the bar.

Right before halftime, Janine Beckie found herself running at USA defenders in the attacking third. She released a shot that implored a diving save from Alyssa Naeher to keep Canada off the score sheet and the USA ahead at the break.

Canada added an element of urgency to its game plan coming out of the half. Head coach Bev Priestman brought on defensive midfielder Quinn to play in the middle of the park, allowing Fleming to push forward and create more goal-scoring chances. NCAA youngster Simi Awujo, known for her prolific attacking abilities and flair, also subbed into the game to spark the Canadian's offence.

As Canada riled itself to score the more vulnerable they became to concede, but the team’s backline supported its attacking efforts. In the 65th minute, defender Kadeisha Buchanan slid across the 6-yard box to clear a dangerous low-driven ball. Moments later, Sheridan was called into action with a diving save, a flying punch and a one-on-one show-stopping deflection to keep the Canadians in the match.

In the game's dying moments, Canada threw players forward and launched long crosses into the box, hoping to grab a goal. While the team was unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet, Canada will look to bounce back Sunday at 17.30 local (18.30 ET / 15.30 PT) when they take on Brazil.
