Match Report

Canada lost 4:1 to Japan in an away friendly match at Denka Big Swan Stadium in Niigata. Ao Tanaka scored early in each half, but it was a pair of goals just before the break that ruined Canada's away trip to the far east.

Tanaka scored in the second minute and goalkeeper Keisuke Osako stopped a Jonathan David penalty attempt in the 22nd minute. Japan then scored two goals just two minutes apart, the first on an own goal and the second by Keito Nakamura.

Canada made six substitutions in the second half, including international debuts for both Mathieu Choinière and Harry Paton. Junior Hoilett scored Canada's lone goal in the 89th minute on a rebound after a Jonathan David was cross was pushed away by Osaka.
