“I thought the players tactically did well today,” said John Herdman, Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team Head Coach. “We were tight defensively and showed our quality in the moments we needed to do so. The main goal was to keep a clean sheet and put the goal difference out of the grasp of Honduras.”

Canada qualifies for the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup with a 2:0 win against Curaçao in their Saturday Concacaf Nations League match making this their first contest since the 2022 World Cup Qatar.

Coming into the match, Canada was without head coach John Herdman, who was serving a match ban from the previous Nations League window. In his absence, the team picked up all three points and kept a clean sheet on the road.

Canada started on the front foot, launching attacks in waves. One of Canada’s early chances was cleared away by Curaçao but only as far as Stephen Eustaquio, who sprayed the ball out wide to winger Richie Laryea.

With his head up, eyes alert, Laryea faced the Caracoa defender one-on-one before sending a low-driven pass across the face of the goal for striker Jonathan David to tap in at the 23rd-minute mark.

Things would go from bad to worse for Curaçao when Jurien Gaari, who was booked with a yellow card in the 13th minute, was sent off for stopping a Canadian counter-attack 10 minutes later.

Despite the lead, Canada didn’t take its foot off the peddle. Later in the first half, Eustaquio whipped in a curling free kick that found forward Cyle Larin, but his on-target header lacked the power to beat the keeper.

But Larin would have the final say. In the 43rd minute, David was on the edge of Curaçao’s box, surrounded by opposition defenders. He managed to flick the ball past the Curaçao defender to Larin, who turned his body and directed his side-footed shot into the bottom right corner.

Larin’s night came to a close in the 63rd minute when a double substitution saw Larin and Alphonso Davies give way for Charles-Andreas Brym and Samuel Adekugbe. Team veteran Atiba Hutchinson marked his 102nd appearance for Canada when he replaced Eustaquio in the 70th minute. Mark-Anthony Kaye replaced Ismaël Koné in the same minute and Tajon Buchannan sealed the substitutions for Canada, coming on for David in the 78th minute.

Canada’s offensive pressure and one-man advantage were too big of a mountain to climb for Curaçao, who failed to score in the match despite keeping a clean sheet for the ladder 45 minutes. As the second half minutes ticked away, Canada controlled the game — passing the ball around the field, looking to score goals and limiting Curaçao’s goal-scoring opportunities.

Canada need a win or draw against Honduras on Tuesday 28 March in Toronto to win top honours in League A Group C. Winner of the group will advance to the Concacaf Nations League Finals from 15-18 June in Las Vegas, a four-nation series featuring the four group winners from League A competition. The Tuesday night match in Toronto will be Canada’s first home match since the Men’s National Team’s historic run to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™.
