Match Report

Match Report: Canada WNT 0:3 USA

Canada were defeated 3:0 by USA in a Women’s International Friendly in front of a record crowd at BMO Field in Toronto on Sunday 2 June, 2013.

The crowd of 22,453 at the game marks the highest-ever attendance for a soccer match at the national soccer stadium.

Canada held its own in the battle until the 70th minute – but ultimately conceded three goals in the final 20 minutes of play en-route to a three-nil defeat.

Alex Morgan opened the scoring when she cut inside from the left flank before dispatching a clinical finish to the bottom right corner in the 70th minute to put her side 1:0 ahead.

Morgan then produced a near carbon-copy of the goal 2 minutes later when again she collected the ball down the left side and beat Erin McLeod with a near identical finish to the bottom corner.

Sydney LeRoux then capped off the victory for the Americans when she rounded McLeod to finish in added time (90+2’) to make it three-nil.

Canada’s best chance of the game came late in the first half when Christine Sinclair was played through the defence down the right side – but her chipped effort from a tight angle was saved by USA keeper Nicole Barnhart.

Canada started the match with Erin McLeod in goal; Kadeisha Buchanan, Emily Zurrer and Carmelina Moscato across the back-line; Rhian Wilkinson, Desiree Scott, Lauren Sesselmann, Sophie Schmidt and Diana Matheson in the midfield; and an attacking pair of Christine Sinclair (c) and Melissa Tancredi.

Tiffany Cameron replaced Tancredi in the 61st minute. Kaylyn Kyle replaced Sophie Schmidt in the 67th minute. Robyn Gayle replaced Rhian Wilkinson in the 71st minute. Danica Wu replaced Emily Zurrer in the 78th minute.

USA started the match with Nicole Barnhart in goal; and Christie Rampone, Crystal Dunn, Heather O’Reilly, Carly Lloyd, Ali Krieger, Lauren Cheney, Alex Morgan, Whitney Engen, Tobin Heath and Abby Wambach across the pitch.

Kristie Mewis replaced Dunn in the 63rd minute. Sydney LeRoux replaced Heath in the 74th minute, Christen Press replaced Morgan in the 82nd minute.

17-year-old centre-back Kadeisha Buchanan was named player of the match for Canada.
