Canada participated in the sixth edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany in June and July 2011, failing to escape a tough group that featured three continental champions (including Canada). After a 1:2 loss to European champions and 2011 hosts Germany (also two-time defending world champions), Canada was eliminated after an 0:4 loss to France (who would finish fourth at Germany 2011). In the group finale, Canada lost 0:1 to African champions Nigeria. Canada’s final rank was a disappointing 16th place out of 16 teams (Canada finished fourth in Group A). Canada’s lone goal was scored by captain Christine Sinclair. This marked Canada’s fifth participation at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, having qualified as CONCACAF champions in FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifiers in November 2010. Canada previously participated at the FIFA Women’s World Cup at Sweden 1995, USA 1999, USA 2003 and China 2007.
