Canada participated in the fifth edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in China PR in September 2007. Canada came within two minutes of escaping the group phase, but conceded a late goal in a must-win group finale against Australia. In three group matches, Canada lost 1:2 to Norway, won 4:0 over Ghana, and drew 2:2 with Australia. Canada’s final rank was ninth place out of 16 teams (Canada finished third in Group C). Canada’s seven goals were scored by five different players, with Christine Sinclair scoring three goals and Candace Chapman, Sophie Schmidt, Martina Franko and Melissa Tancredi each scoring one goal. This marked Canada’s fourth participation in the FIFA Women’s World Cup, having qualified through the CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup in November 2006. Canada previously participated at the FIFA Women’s World Cup at Sweden 1995, USA 1999 and USA 2003.
