Canada won the 1998 CONCACAF Women’s Championship in the Greater Toronto Area, played at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke from 28 August to 6 September. The tournament doubled as the region’s qualifiers for the FIFA Women’s World Cup USA 1999. After winning its group comfortably, Canada won 2:0 over Costa Rica in the semi-final stage to qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup finals for the second time in program history. Two days later, Canada won 1:0 over Mexico to claim its first continental title, with Liz Smith scoring the lone goal of the championship match. With eight goals in five matches, Silvana Burtini was the tournament’s Top Scorer.
