Vancouver Whitecaps FC move on to the 2022 Canadian Championship Final

Vancouver Whitecaps FC defeats CPL’s York United FC 2:1 in a hard-fought battle to advance to the 2022 Canadian Championship Finals.

In the 25’ Russell Teibert made a nice cross into the box for Brian White who had an opportunity for a header but missed just over the crossbar.

Ryan Gauld made a through ball up to Lucas Cavallini which created space for him to run onto and take a low shot on the net but was saved by York’s Niko Giantsopoulos in the 29’.

York United FC had a chance in the 35’ with a free kick from Diyaeddine Abzi which curled towards the net but was saved by Vancouver’s Cody Cropper.

Vancouver Whitecaps FC opened the scoring in the 53’ with a goal from Brian White who buried a rebound in the back of the net after a shot on the volley from Ryan Raposo was deflected by York’s goalkeeper Giantsopoulos.

Abzi had another go at a free kick in the 62’ and had a rocket of a shot down left of the net but Cody Cropper made an incredible save.

In the 74’ Brian White scored his second goal of the match to bring the score further to 2:0 after a cross inside the box from Ryan Gauld.

Isaiah Johnston received a pass from Mouhamadou Kane and made a move inside the box to create space and ran up the left side to score York United FC’s first goal of the match to bring the score to 2:1 (84’).

Bryan White received the Gatorade Performance of the Match after scoring two.

Vancouver Whitecaps FC’s Starting XI featured three Canadian players: captain Russell Teibert, Lucas Cavallini and Ryan Raposo.

Head coach Vanni Sartini of Vancouver Whitecaps FC brought on Luis Martins and Deiber Caicedo for Ryan Raposo and Lucas Cavallini (63’), Tosaint Ricketts and Caio Alexandre for Brian White and Ryan Gauld (77’), Leonard Owusu came in for Andres Cubas (81’).

York United FC featured nine Canadian players in the Starting XI: Niko Giantsopoulos (GK), captain Dominick Zator, Jordan Wilson, Max Ferrari, Diyaeddine Abzi, Chrisnovic N’Sa, Cédric Toussaint and Isaiah Johnston.
