Match Report

Toronto FC punched a ticket to the Semi-Final Round of the 2022 Canadian Championship with a 2:1 victory over HFX Wanderers FC in Halifax.

It was the home side that had the first good chance of the match as Colin Gander played in a cross from a wide position that forced Toronto goalkeeper Quentin Westberg to push the ball over his net (11’).

In the 32’, Mour Samb made a powerful driving run forward but his final ball didn’t find the run of his HFX teammate or challenge Westberg to make a save.

In the 40’ Luca Petrasso played in a great pass toIfunanyachi Achara behind the Wanderers defence but Gander did just enough to get back and put off the TFC striker, and HFX keeper Christian Oxner was able to claim the ball in the air.

The Canadian Premier League side had a final chance to take the lead at the end of the first half with a free kick that was played dangerously into the penalty area and flicked on by Eriks Santos, but Peter Schaale was just unable to steer it into the net (45+2’).

In the 55’, Toronto put together some great build-up play which eventually fell to the feet of Ayo Akinola, but Santos was able to get a huge block to deny the striker.

The ensuing corner kick was whipped in by Petrasso and Jordan Perruzza got a glancing header to direct the ball towards goal. The ball then deflected off of the back of the head of TFC captain Michael Bradley and ended up in the net to give the Major League Soccer side a 1:0 lead (55’).

HFX Wanderers equalized just over 10 minutes later, as Samuel Salter cut in towards the middle and took a low shot through traffic that bent into the bottom corner beyond the fingertips of the diving Westberg (69’).

It was then Wanderers who looked poised to take the lead. In the 78’, Westberg was just able to get a piece of the shot from Aidan Daniels to push it behind for a corner.

In the 79’ Samb received a pass and looked like he had tons of time to take a touch and shoot but Kosi Thompson managed to get across to block the shot.

In the 82’, Akeem Garcia played a pass to Salter, who took a quick touch to cut inside onto his left foot once again, but this time fired his shot just over the crossbar.

In a match that looked destined for penalties, it was instead a late own goal that ended up deciding the match. Petrasso played a brilliant pass through to Jacob Shaffelburg. Shaffelburg was moving away from the HFX goal and instead of trying to get a shot away, looped a ball into the six-yard box. Akinola was unable to connect with it but the on-rushing Jonathan Osorio did make contact and hit the crossbar. The ball ultimately bounced off Wanderers’ defender Schaale and into the net to give Toronto the 2:1 lead (87’).

HFX Wanderers featured seven Canadian players in the Starting XI: Christian Oxner, Zachary Fernandez, Samuel Salter, Aidan Daniels, Marcello Polisi, Jeremy Gagnon-Lapare, and Colin Gander.

Head coach Stephen Hart made three substitutions in the match, bringing on Akeem Garcia for Andre Rampersad (67’), Mohamed Omar for Jeremy Gagnon-Lapare (84’), and Ryan Robinson for Mour Samb (90’).

Toronto FC’s Starting XI also featured seven Canadian players: Lukas Macnaughton, Ralph Priso, Jayden Nelson, Deandre Kerr, Luca Petrasso, Kosi Thompson, and Jordan Perruzza.

Head coach Bob Bradley made a triple change at the start of the second half, bringing in Jonathan Osorio, Ayo Akinola, and Jesus Jimenez in place of Ralph Priso, Ifunanyachi Achara, and Deandre Kerr (46’). He also brought on Jacob Shaffelburg for Jordan Perruzza (70’) and Carlos Salcedo for Kosi Thompson (85’).
