Match Report

York United needed penalties to advance to the second round of the 2022 Canadian Championship, winning 1:1 (7:6) over Atletico Ottawa.

In the 6’, Ballou Tabla got the first chance of the match when he received a pass in the centre of the box that he hit first time, forcing Niko Giantsopoulos to make a diving save.

In the 19’ Osaze De Rosario was denied on the quick break by Atletico Ottawa goalkeeper Nathan Ingham. Ingham was able to make the follow-up save on Sebastian Gutierrez on the rebound.

York United took the lead before halftime on a well-executed quick break. De Rosario received a through pass and then laid it off to Lowell Wright who picked out Diyaeddine Abzi. Abzi fired a rocket of a shot to make it 0:1 (31’).

Atletico came inches away from tying the match when Vladimir Moragrega’s header was caught on the goal line by Giantsopoulos (38’).

Just a few minutes later, Drew Beckie cleared a shot by Dominick Zator off the line at the other end of the pitch to prevent York from doubling the lead (41’).
In the 61’, the two Atletico substitutes combined to tie the score 1:1. Malcolm Shaw headed a long, high cross to the back post from Carl Haworth into the goal.

Ottawa had one great final chance to win the match in regulation, when Brian Wright played in a brilliant low cross through the penalty area but York defender Chrisnovic N’Sa slid in to intercept it and clear the ball out of play before it could reach the path of Shaw (90+1’).

The match ended tied at 1:1 and was decided on penalties, with York FC converting seven of eight penalty kicks, and Atletico Ottawa only scoring six of eight.

Atletico Ottawa started with Canadian Nathan Ingham in goal. Niba Macdonald, Diego Espejo, Miguel Acosta and Abdou Sissoko made up the defence alongside Canadian Drew Beckie, who captained the side. Canadians Ballou Tabla and Maxim Tissot were paired in midfield. Ollie Bassett and Vladimir Moragrega rounded out the side up front.

Head coach Carlos Gonzalez brought on Malcolm Shaw and Carl Haworth in place of Zachary Verhoven and Maxim Tissot (56’), Brian Wright for Vladimir Moragrega (73’), and Ben Mckendry and Keven Aleman for Diego Espejo and Ballou Table (83’).
