Valour FC

Match Report

Forge FC advanced to the Semi-Final Round of the 2021 Canadian Championship with a 2:1 victory over Winnipeg Valour FC.

It was all Forge FC in the first half, as the home side dominated the possession and the chances. In the 13’, Kyle Bekker played a through ball to Woobens Pacius, but Valour goalkeeper Matt Silva was able to get just enough of a touch to keep the ball out of the net.

In the 25’, Pacius was the recipient of another fantastic through pass, this time from Elimane Cisse, but Silva came charging out aggressively to stop the breakaway chance.

In the 28’, Tristan Borges took a couple of quick touches at the top of the box and got a shot away for Forge FC, but the shot flew just over the bar. Just a minute later, Borges had another chance to shoot and got it on target, but it ended up being an easy save for the Valour keeper.

Forge FC was finally able to break the deadlock through David Choiniere (33’), who fired his shot past the keeper after receiving a pass from a falling Jonathan Grant.

The home side doubled their lead just five minutes later. Bekker and Pacius were again able to link up, and Pacius’ first shot was stopped point-blank, but he was all alone to tap in his own rebound (38’).

Just before halftime, Choiniere had a chance to score his second goal of the night following a Valour turnover in a dangerous area, but Silva makes a great diving save.

In the second half, Valour started to get themselves back into the game. In the 55’ Arnold Bouka Moutou took a strong, swerving shot from distance that forced Forge keeper Triston Henry into a good, diving save. The rebound came to Austin Ricci, whose shot went high and wide, but he was offside anyways.

Valour FC cut the lead to 2:1 when Ricci chased down a Forge throw-in back to the keeper and was able to smash a shot into the net from right under Triston Henry’s foot (60’).

In the 67’, Pacius nearly gave Forge back the two-goal lead as he found himself clean through on the goalkeeper, but Silva did well to come out strongly and make the save.

In the 77’, Bekker’s long-range strike was tipped over the crossbar by the fingertips of Silva.

Forge FC’s starting XI featured Canadian Triston Henry in goal, and Daniel Krutzen alongside Canadians Jonathan Grant, Dominic Samuel, and Garven-Michee Metusola in defence. Elimane Cisse and Alexander Achinioti-Jonsson joined Canadians David Choiniere and Kyle Bekker, who also captained the side, in midfield. Canadians Woobens Pacius and Tristan Borges started up front.

Head coach Bobby Smyrniotis brought on Emery Welshman, Paolo Sabak, and Joshua Navarro Sandi for Choiniere, Pacius, and Borges (68’).

Winnipeg Valour FC started Canadian Matthew Silva as their goalkeeper, with Rodrigo Reyes, Arnold Bouka Moutou, and Canadians Rocco Romero and Brett Levis making up the defensive line. Captain Daryl Fordyce, Moses Dyer, Rafael Galhardo, and Canadian Keven Aleman started in midfield, with Canadians Austin Ricci and Federico Pena up front.

Head coach Rob Gale made four substitutions in the match. At halftime, William Akio and Raphael Ohin came on for Dyer and Pena. Sean Rea replaced goal scorer Ricci (64’). Jose Galan replaced Levis (88’) and Caden Tomy came on for Rodrigo Reyes (90+3’).
