Match Report

HFX Wanderers FC secured their spot in the Canadian Championship Quarter-Final Round with a 2:1 home win over AS Blainville. The Wanderers will face CF Montreal in the next round.

The home side took the lead early from a set play, as Cory Bent was able to flick the corner kick from Pierre Lamothe in at the near post (10’).

AS Blainville’s best chance of the first half came from Alexandre Cuvillier, who looked threatening as he outpaced the Wanderers defence, but his shot attempt was ultimately blocked (30’). Just before halftime, the home side had an opportunity to double their lead as a clearance attempt fell to Marcello Polisi at the top of the box, but his volley went just wide of the post.

Early in the second half, Guy Essome equalized for AS Blainville with a cool finish from the penalty spot after substitute Pierre-Rudolph Mayard cut between two HFX defenders and was then taken down by keeper Kieran Baskett in the box (51’).

In the 63’, Joao Morelli’s free kick sailed just wide of the top corner, only minutes after he entered the game.
Less than 10 minutes later, the Wanderers were awarded a penalty of their own, when Akeem Garcia got in behind the Blainville defenders and was fouled by keeper Rayane Yesli. Morelli stepped up and made no mistake from the spot as he put the home side back in the lead (72’).

HFX had an opportunity to put the match out of reach in the 84’, but Morey Doner’s shot trickled just wide of the far post. The side from the Canadian Premier League were able to hold on to the one goal lead to advance over the team from the PLSQ.

Lamothe was named the Toyota Player of the Match.

Akeem Garcia, Cory Bent, and Eriks Santos Pereira rounded out the starting lineup.
In the second half, Joao Morelli and Stefan Karajovanovic replaced Firth and Riggi (60’), Andre Rampersad came on for Lamothe (75’), and Bent was replaced by Alex Andre Marshall (85’).

AS Blainville had nine Canadian players featuring in their starting lineup.
