Match Report

Pacific FC clinched the final spot in the Quarter-Final Round of the Canadian Championship with a 4:3 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

Terran Campbell stepped up to take the penalty for Pacific FC and rolled the ball into the corner of the net to give the Canadian Premier League side the early lead (8’). Manuel Aparicio took the initial shot, which was parried away my Maxime Crepeau before falling to Campbell’s feet, who was then taken down in the box by Jakob Nerwinski.

It didn’t take long for the Whitecaps to equalize. When Pacific goalkeeper Callum Irving was unable to hold onto the ball and defender Lukas MacNaughton’s clearing attempt was missed, Ryan Gauld finished into the empty net (14’).

The home side took the lead for a second time on a goal from Aparicio (28’). He kept running into the box and got the ball back from a falling Joshua Heard and fired a shot into the corner.

At halftime, it was the Canadian Premier League side that led 2:1 over the side from Major League Soccer (MLS).

In the 56’, Pacific FC had another quality scoring chance, but Crepeau dove to his left and just managed to get his fingertips on the soaring header from Campbell to deny the home side.

In the 63’, Heard managed to shrug off a Vancouver defender and made a blistering run with the ball down the left wing, attacking the box and eventually sliding a shot past the keeper to give Pacific FC a 3:1 lead.

Just three minutes later, Gauld scored his second of the match heading in a cross from Dajome to pull the Whitecaps within one (66’).

A Pacific FC free kick taken by Aparicio fell at the feet of Alejandro Diaz who instinctively smashed a shot into the back of the net to make it 4:2 for the home side (75’).

In the 78’, the visitors nearly made it a one goal game again, but the attempt hits the post and is cleared away for a corner by the Pacific FC defence. The Whitecaps would get a third when Gauld was taken down in the penalty area. Dajome stepped up to take the spot kick, which was saved by Irving, but Dajome followed up on his shot to put in the rebound in the dying seconds of the match (90+6’).

Pacific FC’s starting lineup featured 10 Canadian players: goalkeeper Callum Irving, defenders Kadin Chung, Jordan Haynes, Abdoulaye Samake, and Lukas MacNaughton, midfielders Alessandro Hojabrpour, Jamar Dixon, and Manuel Aparicio and strikers Joshua Heard and Terran Campbell. Striker Gianni Dos Santos rounded out the side.

Pacific FC coach Pa-modou Kah brought on Alejandro Diaz for Dos Santos (65’), Kunle Dada-Luke for Campbell (73’), and Thomas Meilleur-Giguere and Victor Blasco for Aparicio and Heard (83’).

Vancouver was led by Canadian Maxime Crepeau in goal. Ranko Veselinovic, Andrew Rose, Javain Brown, and Jakob Nerwinski completed the defensive line. The midfield was made up of Janio Bikel, Ryan Gauld, and Canadians Ryan Raposo and Patrick Metcalfe. Strikers Cristian Dajome and Brian White paired together up front.

Vancouver Whitecaps coach Marc Dos Santos substituted Deiber Caicedo for Raposo (46’), Leonard Owusu for Bikel (55’), Tosaint Rickettes and Florian Jungwirth for Veselinovic and Nerwinski (70’), and finally, Russell Teibert for Metcalfe (90+3’).
