Match Report

Toronto FC claimed the 2020 Voyageurs Cup, winning 1:1 (5:4on penalties) against Forge FC.

The Canadian Premier League side had the first chance of the match, as a Tristan Borges free kick cleared the Toronto FC wall and dipped towards the inside of the post, but goalkeeper Quentin Westberg was able to make a diving save (7’) to keep the sides level.

In the 10’, David Choiniere made a quick cut through the Toronto box and tried a shot at the near post but Westberg was ready for it and made the save.

The pace of Choiniere again challenged the Toronto defence in the 19’ as he made a run past Luca Petrasso into the penalty area. Petrasso fouled Choiniere in the box and Forge was awarded a penalty kick. Borges stepped up to take the penalty but his shot rang off the crossbar and stayed out (20’).

In the 23’, Choiniere made another run and attempted a cutback pass, but it was cleared away by Lukas Macnaughton. A follow-up cross into the box by Aboubacar Sissoko just missed picking out Terran Campbell.

Toronto’s best chance of the first half came in the 26’ from an Alejandro Pozuelo free kick that was swung into the box and found the head of Macnaughton who directed it on target. Forge keeper Triston Henry was able to catch the shot and hold on.

In the 39’, Toronto turned the ball over in their own penalty area and Campbell was able to get a quick shot away but Westberg once again made a diving save to deny the CanPL side.

In the 49’, Ayo Akinola had an opportunity to run in on goal but Henry came charging out aggressively and beat the Toronto striker to the ball to clear it away from danger.

Toronto FC started to find some space to move the ball around in the attacking zone, and the quick passing around the top of the Forge box paid off. Akinola made a pass right across the edge of the box to find Pozuelo, and Pozuelo took a couple of touches to set himself up in the middle before firing his shot into the top left corner to give Toronto a 1:0 lead (57’).

Forge equalized just three minutes later. Sissoko played a crossover the top to switch the field, picking out Borges unmarked on the far side, and Borges fired a volley past Westberg into the far corner of the net (60’).

In the 70’, Sissoko played another great pass, this time a through ball to Choiniere on the run. Westberg came out of his net quickly to close down the angle and Choiniere was unable to play his shot around the keeper who got a hand to it. Westberg recovered quickly, getting back on his feet to catch the follow-up shot from Sissoko.

In the 72’, Kyle Bekker tried a shot from distance that was punched away by Westberg.

Tied 1:1 at the end of 90 minutes, the match went to penalties.
