Match Report

CF Montreal won the Voyageurs Cup with a 1:0 victory over Toronto FC in the 2021 Canadian Championship Final at Stade Saputo.

Montreal came out of the gate strong and had a great opportunity to take an early lead in the first minute of the match. Romell Quioto was played through on goal but TFC goalkeeper Quentin Westberg was able to make a good save to deny a goal (1’).

In the 24’, Mathieu Choiniere found some space down the wing and played a low pass into the Toronto box to Quioto whose shot rolled just wide of the far post.

CF Montreal was able to find lots of space down the left wing throughout the first half and had a number of chances to take the lead. In the 38’, the ball pinballed around at the top of the penalty area before falling to Ahmed Hamdi. Hamdi’s shot was partially blocked by Chris Mavinga which took a bit of the sting out of it and Westberg caught it and held on.

In the 41’, Quioto turned around a defender and found space down the sideline to run, cutting in towards the Toronto net but his shot was once again denied by Westberg.

Just before the stroke of halftime, Quioto beat Toronto’s Michael Bradley to a high bouncing ball that had been played forward from the Montreal half and attempted to touch it over Westberg and into the net, but he wasn’t able to get it up high enough and was stopped by the keeper’s face (44’).

The teams entered the halftime break tied 0:0.

Montreal continued to dominate possession early in the second half and created the bulk of the chances.

In the 54’, Djordje Mihailovic’s shot from a tight angle ricocheted off a defender’s foot, requiring Westberg to be alert and palm it away to safety.

In the 62’, Victor Wanyama’s shot from distance rattled off the crossbar and stayed out of the net.

Mihailovic had another opportunity in the 66’ with a swerving shot from just outside the box, but Westberg was able to punch it clear.

CF Montreal was finally able to capitalize on one of their many chances and take the lead with just over 15 minutes remaining. Quioto was able to get in behind the TFC defenders thanks to a perfectly placed long ball over the top and he placed it over Westberg on the bounce and into the far side of the goal to give the home side a 1:0 lead.

Toronto came inches away from tying the match up in the 90’. A long ball played forward from deep in their own half looked like it was set up perfectly for Nick De Leon to strike, but Montreal keeper Sebastian Breza came out aggressively to get there just before De Leon. Breza’s clearance fell to the feet of Ifunanyachi Achara who played it back into the middle of the box, right to Jordan Perruzza who took a first-time shot. Perruzza’s shot hit the far post and CF Montreal was able to clear in the ensuing scramble to hold on to their 1:0 lead.
Both sides featured five Canadians in their starting lineups.

CF Montreal’s starting XI featured Canadian Sebastian Breza in goal, with Canadians Kamal Miller, Zachary Brault-Guillard, and Joel Waterman in defence alongside Rudy Camacho. The midfield was made up of Victor Wanyama, Ahmed Hamdi, Djordje Mihailovic, Joaquin Torres, and Canadian Mathieu Choiniere. Romell Quioto started up front.

Toronto FC’s starting XI featured goalkeeper Quentin Westberg. Michael Bradley, Chris Mavinga, and Canadians Julian Dunn and Richie Laryea made up the defence. Marco Delgado and Alejandro Pozuelo were joined by Canadians Noble Okello, Jonathan Osorio, and Jacob Shaffelburg in midfield. Dominic Dwyer started as the lone striker.
