Match Report

York United advanced to the Semi-Final Round of the 2022 Canadian Championship with a 2:2 (4:3 on penalties) victory against Pacific FC at Starlight Stadium.

The first chance of the match came for Pacific FC as Alejandro Diaz tried to find a way between two York defenders, but Chrisnovic N’Sa was able to recover (4’).

It was the home side who struck first, taking an early 1:0 lead on a corner kick taken by Luca Ricci and headed into the net by Amer Didic (12’).

In the 25’, Lowell Wright showed a brilliant piece of control on his chest, but his shot took a deflection off of a Pacific FC.

On the resulting corner, taken by Diyaeddine Abzi, Roger Thompson unleashed a powerful header to draw York United level 1:1 (25’).

Just five minutes later, York took a 1:2 lead with another headed goal, this time in open play as Wright’s cross found the run of Osaze De Rosario who deftly directed his header past goalkeeper Callum Irving (31’).

Marcos Bustos almost equalized for Pacific in the 39’ with a shot from distance that went just inches over the crossbar. In the 41’ Bustos again missed the net by inches, this time on a low ball that he played in from a wide area that flashed across the mouth of goal and past the outstretched goalkeeper.

In the 57’, Gianni Dos Santos lined up a free kick from outside of the York United penalty area and fired a rocket towards the far corner, but York goalkeeper Nikolaos Giantsopoulos dove across and got a strong hand to the shot to deny Pacific the equalizer.

Pacific tied the match to send it to penalties at the death, as Didic caught his one-time shot cleanly from the top of the box with his left foot to beat Giantsopoulos (90+6’).

Giantsopoulos saved two penalties (from Alejandro Diaz and Marco Bustos) to secure the victory for York United, as they took the shootout 3:4.

Pacific FCs starting lineup featured eight Canadian players: Callum Irving, Marco Bustos, Joshua Heard, Kunle Dada-Luke, Luca Ricci, Jamar Dixon, Thomas Meilleur-Giguere, and Amer Didic.

Head coach James Merriman brought on Djenairo Daniels in place of Luca Ricci (67’), and Abdoulaye Samake for Jamar Dixon (80’).

York United’s starting XI featured 10 Canadians: Nikolaos Giantsopoulos, Jordan Wilson, Dominick Zator, Roger Thompson, Noah Verhoeven, Diyaeddine Abzi, Chrisnovic N’Sa, Osaze De Rosario, Isaiah Johnston, and Lowell Wright.

Head coach Martin Nash was forced into a first half substitution, bringing on Cedric Toussaint in place of the injured Roger Thompson (43’). In the second half, Mateo Hernandez and Eduardo Jesus entered the match in place of Lowell Wright and Sebastian Gutierrez (62’), Lisandro Cabrera for Osaze De Rosario (88’) and Mouhamadou Kane in place of Isaiah Johnston (90+2’).
