Toronto FC advances to Championship final

Posted on 9 May 2012 in Canadian Championship

Toronto FC has won its semi-final series 2-0 on aggregate to advance to the 2012 Amway Canadian Championship final. Toronto FC won 2:0 at home on Wednesday 9 May,following up on a 0:0 away draw with Impact Montréal from one week earlier. Toronto scored early at home, then defended its end while scoring a second goal after being reduced to 10 men in the 17th minute. Reggie Lambe and Ryan Johnson scored the goals for Toronto FC.

Lambe opened the scoring in the second minute of play. He took advantage of a loose-ball situation in the penalty area to give Toronto the quick 1-0 lead. Johnson scored the second goal in the 38th minute on a counter attack.

Despite a man advantage for more than 70 minutes and numerous chances created, the Impact could not beat the Toronto back end.

"For the most part we played well," said Toronto FC coach Aron Winter. "It was not easy because for most of the game we played with a man less. A big compliment to the players. Even in that period we created many chances and the 2:0 score was a little low, but we played well."

Toronto FC's starting XI featured Milos Kočić in goal, Richard Eckersley, Adrian Cann, Doneil Henry and Ashtone Morgan along the backline, Eric, Julian de Guzman and Torsten Frings in the midfield, and Reggie Lambe, Ryan Johnson and Eric Avila up front.

In the second half, coach Aron Winter replaced Avila with Terry Dunfield (57'), Plata with Jeremy Hall (66'), and Lambe with Nick Soolsma (73').

Impact Montréal's starting XI featured Donovan Ricketts in goal, Jeb Brovsky at right back, Matteo Ferrari and Shavar Thomas at centre back, Tyson Wahl at left back, Sinisa Ubiparipovic, Patrice Bernier, Collen Warner and Davy Arnaud in the midfield, and Bernardo Corradi and Sanna Nyassi up front.

In the second half, coach Jesse Marsch replaced Bernier with Felipe Martins (46'), Thomas with Justin Mapp (46'), and Brovsky with Hassoum Camara (75').

The 9 May 2012 match was played at BMO Field with 15,016 fans in attendance.
