Edmonton, Alberta – Canada’s Women’s World Cup Team earned an 8-0 win over Mexico in an international friendly at Commonwealth Stadium in front of a crowd of a record crowd of 29,593. Christine Latham scored two goals as the Canadians earned their ninth win in as many games against Mexico. It was also Canada’s eighth game without a loss (seven wins, one draw).
Canada got off to a great start when Kara Lang opened the scoring in the fourth minute. Christine Latham intercepted a poor back pass with a slide tackle and the ball rolled to Lang who beat the onrushing Mexican goalkeeper Jennifer Molina with a low shot. It was Lang’s 16th goal in only 28 games.

Edmonton, Alberta – Canadian Women’s World Cup team head coach Even Pellerud today announced defender/midfielder Candace Chapman will miss the upcoming Women’s World Cup after suffering a torn ACL during an exhibition game on Friday, August 22nd. Chapman was flown to Toronto on Monday, August 25th and underwent an MRI which revealed the extent of the injury. A consult for further assessment by an orthopedic surgeon will take place this Wednesday.
“It is disappointing for the team and coaching staff to lose Candace. The timing is very unlucky and definitely unfortunate for Candace,” said Pellerud. “We hope that after her surgery she will be back with the team again.”

Ottawa, Ontario – The Canadian Soccer Association is pleased to announce the appointment of two Canadians to officiate at the upcoming 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup from September 20-October 12, 2003 in the United States.
Sonia Denoncourt and Denise Robinson have been chosen with Lynda Bramble of Trinidad and Tobago to work together as a trio throughout the whole event. The three person referee team format was implemented for the first time at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea/Japan and will be adopted for this year’s Women’s World Cup.
The two Canadians are among 36 chosen from across the world to work in one of 12 referee teams to arbitrate the entire event. Three additional referees from the host country (USA) have also been chosen to act as extra fourth officials only.
Ottawa, Ontario – Canada’s Women’s World Cup Team today tied Ghana 1-1 in Seattle, Washington in preparation for the upcoming Women’s World Cup to be held in the United States this fall.
Christine Sinclair, who hasn’t played since June 15th when Canada defeated Mexico 2-1 scored Canada’s only goal in the seventh minute. Ghana tied the game in the 34th minute. No goals were scored in the second half.
Canada played the match with a 4-3-3 formation before changing to 4-4-2 in the second half.
“The game was very even,” said Head Coach Even Pellerud. “Ghana played a very typical African style. We had 10 good scoring chances to their eight.”

Each match date consists of an afternoon or evening doubleheader, except the Third Place Match on Oct. 11 and the Final on Oct. 12, which will both be played as stand-alone games at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
