Sportsnet To Cover Canadian Games

Ottawa, Ontario – The Canadian Soccer Association and Rogers Sportsnet announced today the network will broadcast Canada’s upcoming games at the 2003 Women’s World Cup in the United States beginning on September 20, 2003.



Sportsnet will broadcast on tape delay Canada’s opening game in group C against Germany on September 20th with a 5:45 p.m. (ET) kick-off at 10:00 p.m. (ET). Canada next game against Argentina on September 24th at 8:30 p.m. will be broadcast live on all Sportsnet networks at 8:30 p.m. (ET). The final game of the first round against Japan on September 27th with a 3:30 p.m. (ET) kick-off will be broadcast on tape delay at 7:00 p.m. (ET).

Ottawa, Ontario – L’Association canadienne de soccer et le réseau de télévision Rogers Sportsnet ont annoncé aujourd’hui que les trois matchs du Canada à la Coupe du monde de soccer féminin aux Etats-Unis à compter du 20 septembre 2003.



Sportsnet diffusera le premier match opposant le Canada à l’Allemagne en différé, samedi le 20 septembre. Le coup d’envoi est prévu pour 17 h 45 (Heure de l’Est) et le match sera télédiffusé à 22 h 00 (Heure de l’Est). Le deuxième match du Canada, contre l’Argentine, sera télédiffusé en direct, mercredi le 24 septembre à 20 h 30 (Heure de l’Est). Le dernier match du Canada en ronde préliminaire contre le Japon, samedi le 27 septembre sera télédiffusé en différé. Le match débutera à 15 h 30 (Heure de l’Est) et sera présenté à l’antenne à 19 h 00 (Heure de l’Est).

Sutton Named A-League Goalkeeper of the Year

MONTREAL — Montreal Impact goalkeeper Greg Sutton was named goalkeeper of the year in the A-League. The 26-year-old ‘keeper dominated the league with a goals against average of 0.730 on top of tallying a league-best 11 shutouts and 15 wins.



“It’s exciting but I have to give credit to my teammates,” said Sutton, who allowed only 20 goals in 26 starts this season. “We’ve been playing together for a few years now and we’ve learned to know our strengths and weaknesses. That allows us to adjust to different situations in order to better shut down the opponent.”

Pellerud Announces World Cup Roster

Ottawa, Ontario – Canadian Women’s World Cup Team Head Coach Even Pellerud today announced his 20-player roster for the upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup in the United States.



Silvana Burtini, Andrea Neil and Charmaine Hooper have been selected to their third consecutive World Cup while Isabelle Morneau, Sharolta Nonen and Karina LeBlanc are the only other players who have World Cup experience, having played in 1999 in the United States.



There are six players from the Under-19 team which won a silver medal at the FIFA Women’s World Championship in 2002: Christine Sinclair, Erin McLeod, Sasha Andrews, Carmelina Moscato, Kara Lang and Brittany Timko.

Pellerud annonce son alignement pour la Coupe du monde

Ottawa, Ontario – L’entraîneur-chef Even Pellerud de l’équipe canadienne féminine de Coupe du monde a dévoilé son alignement de 20 joueuses qui prendront part à la Coupe du monde de soccer féminin de la FIFA aux États-Unis.

Canada Blanks Mexico in Burnaby

Edmonton, Alberta – Canada’s Women’s World Cup Team earned a 6-0 win over Mexico at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, BC Thursday night to sweep their two-game series. It was Canada’s fourth straight two-game series sweep, with earlier victories coming over England, Mexico and Brazil. Canada has now won all 10 encounters between the two countries and are undefeated in their last nine games. The Canadians outscored their visitors 14-0 in the two games after Sunday’s 8-0 win in Edmonton.



Kara Lang opened the scoring in the seventh minute when she intercepted a poor back pass and her right-footed shot eluded Jennifer Molina in the Mexican goal, though it did hit Mexican defender Monica Gonzalez on the way in. It was Lang’s 16th goal in 28th game.

Il s’agit d’une quatrième balayage de suite pour les Canadiennes, après avoir vaincu les Anglaises, les Mexicaines (au Mexique) et le Brésil. Le Canada a remporté les 10 matchs contre ces équipes cette année et est invaincu à ses neuf derniers matchs. Le Canada a dominé ses adversaires 14 à 0 dans ses deux matchs contre le Mexique, après une victoire de 8 à 0 dans le premier match, dimanche à Edmonton.



Kara Lang a ouvert la marque à la sixième minute après qu’elle ait intercepté une mauvaise passe en retrait et son tir du pied droit a battu Jennifer Molina, déviant sur le défenseur Monica Gonzalez. Il s’agissait d’un 16e but en 28 matchs internationaux pour la Canadienne.

CSA Accepts Osieck Resignation

Ottawa, Ontario – The Canadian Soccer Association today announced it has received and accepted the resignation of Canadian Men’s World Team Head Coach and Technical Director Holger Osieck, effective immediately.



The CSA will immediately begin the search for a replacement. Men’s World Cup Team Assistant Coach Colin Miller will handle the head coaching responsibilities for Canada’s international friendly against Finland on October 11, in Tampere, Finland. A new head coach is expected to be chosen and in place by December, 2003.



“I wish to take this opportunity to thank Holger publicly for his commitment and accomplishments with the Men’s World Cup Team,” said CSA President Andy Sharpe. “Both sides agreed that it was time for us to move in a new direction.”

Impact Win Voyageurs Cup

MONTREAL — The Montreal Impact put an end to a three-game dry spell offensively and was crowned top team in Canada, Sunday, following a 2-0 victory against Calgary.



With the win, coach Bob Lilley’s squad won the Voyageurs Cup, awarded to the top Canadian team in the A-League, for the second year in a row. Montreal also finished on top of the Eastern Conference, as well as tied for first place in overall A-League standings with the Milwaukee Wave United with 54 points.



“We’ve won the Voyageurs Cup, the Can-Am Cup and the division title, so we’ve done well this year, and hopefully we’ll carry that into the playoffs,” said Lilley, whose team will face the Rochester Rhinos in next weekend’s first playoff round.
