Ottawa, Ontario – Canada’s Women’s World Cup team will play China on Thursday, October 2nd at 7:30 p.m. (Local) in Portland, Oregon in the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup USA Quarterfinals. China defeated Russia 1-0 late Sunday night to claim first place in Group D.
With the 3-1 win over Japan on Saturday, the Canadian (2-1-0) finished second in Group C to become the first Canadian team to make it out of the opening round of a World Cup.
Germany will play Russia at 4:30 p.m. (Local) in the earlier of the doubleheader games to be played at PGE Park in Portland.

Foxboro, Massachusetts – Canada’s Women’s World Cup Team advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup with a 3-1 win over Japan at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts, Saturday. Canada will likely play the winner of the China-Russia game which will be played Sunday.
Canada needed to win in order to clinch second place in Group C and they did just that with goals from Christine Latham, Christine Sinclair and Kara Lang. Sinclair booked Canada a flight to Portland and a berth in the quarter-finals with a strong header off a Brittany Timko corner in the 49th minute after the teams went into the dressing room tied at 1-1.

New York, NY – La CONCACAF a annoncé aujourd’hui que la ronde finale de qualification olympique pour le tournoi féminin de soccer des Jeux d’Athènes 2004 a été déplacée du Mexique au Costa Rica. Ce tournoi qui devait avoir lieu du 25 février au 7 mars sera maintenant disputé du 2 au 12 février 2004, en même temps que le tournoi masculin, qui aura lieu au Mexique.
« Nous sommes très heureux que le Costa Rica ait cette occasion d’accueillir cette compétition d’importance, » a déclaré Chuck Blazer, secrétaire général de la CONCACAF. « Le football féminin au Costa Rica a toujours profité d’un soutien important et a été un des points d’ancrage dans notre région. Le déplacement de ce tournoi résout les questions de logistique, soient de disputer les deux tournois (masculin et féminin) en même temps, dans deux endroits différents. »
25.09.2003 – CONCACAF announced today that the 2004 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualification Final Round has been relocated from Mexico to Costa Rica, and it will now take place from 25 February – 7 March. The CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifying Finals will remain in Mexico as it is slated for 2-12 February 2004.
“We are very pleased that Costa Rica will have the opportunity to host this important competition,” said CONCACAF General Secretary Chuck Blazer. “Women’s Football in Costa Rica has always enjoyed strong support and has been one of the major footholds of the sport in our region. Bringing this tournament there both solves the logistical issues of running both the men’s and women’s tournament at the same time while having a great new venue for this competition.”
Columbus, Ohio – Canada’s Women’s World Cup Team earned their first World Cup victory with a 3-0 win over Argentina at Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio, Wednesday. Earlier in the day, Germany defeated Japan 3-0. The Germans lead Group C with six points while Canada and Japan are tied with three points each. However Japan’s goal differential is plus 3 while Canada is even, meaning Canada must beat Japan on Saturday in Boston to advance to the quarter-finals.
Christine Latham earned Canada’s opening goal in the 18th minute when she made a strong run into the box and was fouled by Mariela Coronel. Charmaine Hooper stepped up and beat Argentine goalkeeper Romina Ferro for her third World Cup goal and first of the 2003 tournament. Latham then scored two goals late in the game to seal the shutout win.
Head coach Even Pellerud shuffled his lineup a little bit following Saturday’s 4-1 loss to Germany, with Taryn Swiatek coming in for Karina LeBlanc in goal and Rhian Wilkinson replacing the injured Andrea Neil. Neil picked up a slight hamstring pull in training on Monday.

With the score knotted at one, the Germans scored in the opening minute of the second half and then again in the 75th minute after some good Canadian pressure to break the game open. The goals could not have come at a worse time for the Canadians who were also trying to recover from a penalty which gave the Germans their first goal of the game.
